Chiefly correspondence to Richard Thomas Walker Duke and his son William Richard Duke, with much printed material: newspapers, pamphlets, articles and speeches. Letters, 1871-96, to R.T.W. Duke chiefly while in Congress, concern requests for patronage and government jobs, for copies of the 1870 census, agricultural bulletins, his support on the pension bill for veterans of the War of 1812, on the bankruptcy law of 1873, protests over tobacco taxes, claims against the Federal government, and some private business. Also printed speeches given in Congress, etc., and items on the free silver issue. Letters, 1897-1903, to W. R. Duke while a member of the Virginia. House of Delegates, deal with requests for patronage, funds for various institutions, child labor law, temperance and local option, the Alumni Association of U.Va., with many letters from Confederate veterans seeking pensions, and 7 items concerning J. Hartwell Smith, a dentist. Ledger, 1889-1920, kept by Duke as clerk of the Charlottesville School District, including census of school children, amounts of various funds, and expenditures. Items pertaining to various members of the Duke family including invitations, banquet menus, theater and concert programs, postcards, etc. Also several photographs and books.
